How to Hang a Hammock...

Choosing a Location

Traditionally hung between two trees, you can hang a hammock between two posts set in the ground, on a deck, on a hammock stand or from a ceiling beam of your home.

What ever your choice, make certain the supports are strong enough to support the extra weight. We recommend the trees or posts to be a minimum of 6" (15 cm) in diameter or 6" x 6" (15 cm x 15 cm) in size. Do not use wood supports which are cracked, split or rotten or which are too soft to properly hold the screw hooks. For outdoor use pressure treated lumber or types resistant to rot. If using posts, they should be at 2-3 feet deep into the ground, dig the hole, place post in hole, fill with cement and let dry completely.

Distance between post or trees

Distance: It's easiest to hang your hammock in a space at least 1 foot (30 cm) longer than the overall length of the hammock (from hanging loop to hanging loop). For example, a 10' hammock requires two posts or trees 11' apart; a 11’ hammock a 12’ post or trees apart.

Height: The bolt hook should be mounted anywhere from 5 to 6 feet (1.5 m to 1.8 m) above the ground. You may wish to hang it higher or lower depending on the distance between your supports and on your personal preference

How to hang a hammock using two posts
1.
From your favorite hardware store buy the following hardware: two eye-bolts  or j-bolts  (see figure) 8-12” long , four s-hooks or spring clips (see figure), and two pieces of 1.5’ (feet) long of chains to fit spring clip or s-hooks .

2. Drill a 1/2" (1.27 cm)  a hole in the post where you want your bolt to pass through, , use washers and nuts to tighten.
3. Screw the bolts into the pilot holes. Be sure to set the bolts deep enough that the eye is against the wood.

4. Attach  one spring-clip or s-hook to eye-bolt

5. Attach one end of the chain to spring-clip or s-hook already attached, and from the other end of the chain attach the other spring clip.

6. The assembly of the  hardware should look similar to the picture  bellow.

Hammock hanging instructions

Use one or two lengths chain and S-hooks as necessary to reach between the hammock and the hooks. See Illustration. It is normal for your new hammock to stretch considerably when it is new, especially if it is made of cotton. As it stretches out to its full length take up the slack in the chain. Do not wrap chain around the hook. Do not allow chain to become twisted between the hook assembly and the ring of the hammock.  Avoid stretching your hammock too tightly as this greatly increases the load on the hardware and supports.
